My journey to becoming a FreshSight consultant has been fascinating thus far. Having been encouraged to join by friends who have completed the programme before, I submitted my application online in January. Although I was initially hesitant because I have no experience in consulting, the process was relatively simple and consisted of a handful of motivational questions. The interview itself was an excellent opportunity for me to meet potential consultants and the management team. Furthermore, the experience itself has been invaluable insight to the interview process, which has been useful in my assessment centres for internships. Interviewees were given case studies in groups of three and asked to have an open discussion under supervision. A few days later, I was fortunate to receive a call from the management team to join FreshSight.
The first few days consisted of a Frontloading session over the weekend, which included a series of teambuilding exercises and showcased the diversity of consultants. I have not met two students from the same country and degree background…yet! Each week on Tuesdays we sign up to a workshop with either Claire or Hajira who deliver tangible skills in Excel (Data analysis) and Business Writing to other skills valuable and applicable in the workplace. I consider these new workshops held by our Training Managers to be an excellent opportunity for FreshSight consultants to identify key areas of improvement and build upon these to support their respective teams. Furthermore, each team has its own allocated member of management who is integrated into the team, acting as a mentor in the consulting cycle.
My team is working on improving student engagement with the University of Edinburgh Alumni and Development team and their platforms, i.e. social media and alumni emails. By meeting the client regularly, consultants can build their professional work experience by sharing insights and communicating critical issues. My team is very varied with a mix of nationalities, disciplines and skillsets. I have no doubt expanded my network with students I would have not usually come into contact with. This has been invaluable in adding perspective to my own university experience and future endeavours. The management team are very open to engaging with consultants and providing adequate and meaningful support. The social aspect is also a firm positive, with monthly events being the norm at FreshSight. Overall, I would say the experience has been enjoyable to date. As I am only in week 3 of the cycle, I look forward to the numerous deadlines and presentations that lay ahead.
